Mission in Sesimbra, Portugal, October 2007

sesimbrah300The second at-sea experiment of the VENUS project was carried out in the bay of Sesimbra, south of Lisbon, Portugal, between 15th and 27th October 2007. In the sequence of the results acquired in Pianosa Island experiment (September 2006), this second mission's goal was to test automatic acquisition systems of photogrammetric data at more than 50 m depth.

The site chosen, Barco da Telha or Tiles' Vessel, lies at 55 m depth. As occurred in Pianosa Island mission, the objective was to gather independent archaeological information through divers and through automatic robotic systems and afterwards to compare and critically evaluate the data acquired by ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) with the data gathered by human resources.

 Tiles' Vessel sea mission, coordinated by DANS (SG-MC) team, was composed by three main areas:

  • localization and georeferentiation of the site through side scan sonar (done by CNANS) and multibeam sonar survey and GIB positioning (assured by IST);
  • photogrammetric data acquisition by divers (CNRS responsibility);
  • photogrammetric and video data acquisition by ROV (ISME equipment and COMEX cameras); (Mission website...)
